Freaky Deeky is the brainchild of Hal Schuler aka Time Squid & Hamil Griffin Cassidy on MTN 17 Minneapolis Public Access. This is not what you’d expect from a public access, live call in program. I’d venture to say this is not what you’d expect from, well…anything or anyone. It’s really unlike anything you’ve ever seen – anywhere. The only frame of reference I have is to say it reminds me of Tim & Eric Awesome Show Great Job, during Tim & Eric’s most abstract moments of seizure inducing hyper hilarity. There are plenty of awkward closeups (my favorite) and radomness, in fact the whole show is improvised and heavily stylized with unpredictable psychedelic video effects. Time Squid’s multiple blue screen keyframe effects are stunning and obnoxiously awesome. There is a rotating crowd of freaksters in and out of the frame riffing off of wise cracking callers and producers. Visual puns abound, based on that week’s theme or spurred on by the increasingly regular yet random lineup of call in guests. I’d have to say at times the show, if you can call it that, is actually hard to watch for an average viewer – that’s why you know its fresh. It’s a little unsettling to see people basically “freaking out” on TV. It’s also hilarious, and there’s been rumors circling about suits from the Cartoon Network think it is as well. But more on that later when we interview our friend Time Squid for an unpdate!
